Deconstructing Religion and Finding Jesus

If you're deconstructing religion on this Easter Sunday, yet still drawn to Jesus, you’re not alone.

My path following Jesus began in a strict, religious home and has since grown to a personal, freeing relationship.

No matter what you believe or what faith you may resonate with at this stage in your spiritual journey, most can agree that Jesus is an enlightened master, loved and hated by many. Eyewitness accounts confirm the miracles he performed and historians confirm his crucifixion. The book of John confirms that all was created through him and he is one with the Creator.

While it may be difficult to separate the two:

Jesus and religion aren't the same thing—and this may likely be why when people leave religion they still feel a longing in their hearts for a deep spiritual connection. They begin seeking elsewhere away from Jesus, when really the answer IS Jesus, with or without man-made religion.

While seeking away from religion, some strive for a concept called Christ consciousness. Yet has anyone been able to attain it? I haven’t heard that anyone has… If you know of someone I’d love to meet them! Perhaps this is because they are leaving Christ out of the equation and rather striving for the concept of Christ.

But Christ cannot be conceptualized.

I have found personally that Jesus is to be experienced and the only way to do that is to follow him, solely. To lay down every other distraction to study him and follow him solely.

But maybe that doesn’t feel right for you.

Does the concept of seeking Christ consciousness feel safer for you at this stage in your spiritual journey?

Ok. Let’s meet you there.

In that case, whether it’s seeking Christ consciousness or seeking to simply follow Christ to be more like him, the first thing any scholar would do is to study him and live by his word found in the Gospel: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

If I were this scholar and wanted the best results to completely immerse myself, I would start by saying a prayer out loud to follow Jesus as “the way, the truth, and the life” and I would embark on a journey to study his life and what was important to him. I would choose to be all in. I would download the Logos app so I could read the original Gospel in Greek before it was translated hundreds of times. I would “eat” it as my sole spiritual food for an entire year and spend at least 20 minutes per day seeking Jesus and meditating on every word that came out of his mouth. I would study what was of #1 utmost importance to him and make it #1 utmost importance to me.

I would want to know what he meant by the Kingdom of heaven being within and how his Father’s will for the Kingdom will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

I would ask daily to be an instrument for this Kingdom to come to earth. I would seek God’s voice daily and go to my knees to cast all my burdens on him when times felt heavy.

I would work on my self-love and self-care so that I could love my neighbor as myself in the greatest way as Christ loves us. I would love people from my heart without knowing anything about them without judgment.

I would forgive not 7 but 77 times, with 77 layers of forgiveness breakthroughs in order to rise into Christ-like states of compassion and wholeness around every perceived wrong experience in my life.

I would forgive man-made religion for the ways they missed the mark while equally taking any opportunity as Jesus did to call out religious leaders who are more about works and building their church rather than the condition of the heart and building the Kingdom.

I would seek to heal the parts of me that feels triggered when God is revealed as a loving Heavenly Father. I would seek to forgive God for ways I believe he fell short for me or others. I would seek to understand so I could release expectations and be in flow with his perfect Divine plan.

I would surrender all pride and rise to meet him in his perspective in all things.

I would seek to heal the parts of me that were abused or abandoned by an earthly father so my heart is positioned and unlocked to receive my heavenly Father’s love. I would seek to heal the parts of me that were abused or abandoned by an earthly mother so my heart is positioned and unlocked to receive my heavenly Father’s love and the love of sisters in Christ.

I would ask Jesus for his heart so I could carry it and be the light as he asks us to be.

I would call out to Jesus in my most vulnerable states and ask for him to use my weaknesses and turn them into power.

I would seek the voice of my heavenly Father through Jesus as my internal guidance system in order to carry out the purpose for my life.
I would crucify my own desires and lay down anything impure and defiling in the eyes of Jesus so I could walk in spiritual strength.

I would ask to be filled with the Holy Spirit as he left this gift for his remaining 11 disciples and 109 other men and women in the “upper room” 50 days after his resurrection on Pentecost.

I would ask to walk in the spirit daily and ask God to give me the spiritual gifts he imparted upon his people. I would lay down any substitution to seeking answers and seek answers only through Christ.

I used to be in your shoes seeking. 15 years of seeking. Then another 10 years of discovering. I’m grateful to say I’m still in process.

Yet what do I have now?

So far?

It's real. It's free. It's alive.

Pure love.

Pure grace.

Jesus.
